PHOENIX, Oct. 3, 2007 - Employment In Arizona's copper industry improved 19 percent to 8,200 jobs, and the industry's total economic benefit to the state was up 34 percent to more than $4.7 billion, according to the latest annual study prepared for the Arizona Mining Association.
"The historically strong copper market continues to benefit Arizona," said John Low, chairman of the mining association. "We're providing Arizona, the nation and the world with a product that is essential to infrastructure and modern society."
The study was produced by the Western Economic Analysis Center of Marana. It reports that for 2006 Arizona's copper producers provided 60 percent of the copper mined in the United States. The total economic impact to the nation of Arizona's production was more than $27.5 billion.
The economic impact figures include payrolls, business purchases, taxes, fees and other monies paid by the copper producers and the ripple effect as the money moves through the economy. In total, according to the report, 28,600 Arizonans had jobs in 2006 directly or indirectly related to the copper business. That figure is up 29 percent from 22,200 the year before.
Dr. George F. Leaming of the Western Economic Analysis Center has been monitoring and analyzing the industry since 1973. The annual report provides detailed historical figures along with impact broken out by county, related businesses and other factors. Copies of the 52-page report are available from the Arizona Mining Association. A PDF file of the report can be downloaded from the associations' web site, www.azcu.org.
